Long Live the Queens

Posted on June 17, 2017June 16, 2017

So much going on…  I’ll finish this story first. I released my three new queens into their hives where they’ve been acclimating themselves and their new subjects.  Two went smoothly, I opened their queen cages and they came out in a minute or so…  One hive didn’t act very receptive, so I’m not sure how…

Since some of you are suffering through a heat wave… This goes back to 1930’s? winter time… snow on the ground… Herefords on the hill. (Thanks to J.A.G. – who posts old family photos so I can steal some of them and post them here!)

Hoping for Success

Posted on June 14, 2017

There’s plenty I don’t know about beekeeping and that was apparent today.  I’ve purchased three new queens, as I didn’t see any larva or brood when I first checked the hives.  My second check gave me the suspicion of a working layer… a worker bee that has begun laying as a queen.  She will have…

Branding Portraits, Three

Posted on June 13, 2017

Fire tenders… yes, Quinlan’s face is filthy… We reenacted the cooks’ photo from this post… That’s all, folks!  Thanks for putting up with my “fun”. (This post is late due to NO POWER last night… extreme weather in Wyoming, torrential rain, hail, tornadoes… crazy times in the Far Far West)

Branding Portraits

Posted on June 11, 2017June 10, 2017

At branding, I’m running the bar part of our A bar A brand.  That means I visit every calf to apply the brand.  That doesn’t leave much time for photography!  I have a bit of time since Vernon or Johnny go first to apply the two A’s… and if I let the vaccinators in first…

That Works

Posted on June 10, 2017June 9, 2017

I’ve noticed bright, colorful flower pots for sale… a rainbow of colors.  I’ve been tempted… might as well have some color in your flowerbeds before the flowers actually BLOOM. But you know me, I didn’t want to spend the $$$ for a colored plastic pot. I have all sorts of boring, black, white, and clay…

Wordless Wednesday – “Modern Cowboys”

Posted on June 8, 2017June 7, 2017

For Vernon and Johnny, it was a little red book, pencil written on the tiny cramped lines… There were cattle numbers and dates born, doctored sick ones, and which were sent to town.  There were bull numbers and hay numbers, some phone numbers, and “notes to self”…  No surprise that my son uses his iPhone…

Picking on B

Posted on June 7, 2017June 6, 2017

Picking on B. (in black and white, no less!).  Don’t know why, but most of my favorites from branding include B.!  So, he gets a post to himself. Don’t tell him, I’ll never hear the end of it! (P.S., everybody wants to be a roper, but at the Greet Ranch, ropers, too, take a turn…

Gorgeous Light

Posted on June 6, 2017June 5, 2017

I’ve moved from tired and sore to flat out exhausted.  After saddling at 5 am, we were finally home at 2:30 pm.  I ate and drank and drank and drank (hot day), then fell asleep.  I’ve been dozing off and on since.  I do something productive, sit down, then boom! wake up 30 minutes later!…
