Maybe

Posted on May 17, 2015

The corral where we brand is about a football field away from where most people park their pickups and horsetrailers.  We had finished and I abandoned the corral quickly, heading to the big metal shop to set out lunch.  On my journey over, I followed J.’s horse.  He was quitting the country. Well, ok, he…

Preparation

Posted on May 15, 2015

Our first branding is scheduled for tomorrow.  A good sized rainstorm hit this evening, and there’s a good chance for more tomorrow.  We’re unsure if branding will happen or not, wet weather and branding do not mix! However, chili is cooked, cookies made, relish tray washed and sliced, house was cleaned (and re-dirtied), new bed…

Put Your GPS Away

Posted on May 14, 2015

The sound was strange and my stomach sank.  All dogs were asleep inside, alternately underfoot and snoring in the corner as befits a proper English Shepherd.  This was during a snoring span.  I turned to the window and saw a man, older, grey-haired, sweatshirted paunch over flannel pajama pants.  He was walking in my barely…

Wordless Wednesday – “Justice”

There should be a term for spectacular sunsets… one photo doesn’t do it justice.

Questions and Answers – May 2015 Edition – Part Two

Posted on May 12, 2015

Kris:  How about an Eden update? I’d love to hear how she’s coming along. Eden is a pistol, and I rarely keep up with her.  She is definitely a gopher hunter, she’s usually covered in red dirt and wet from snow or dew on plants or rain…  She’s quite good at the Paper Plate Training,…

Questions and Answers – May 2015 Edition – Part One

Posted on May 11, 2015

Kay: So with a rare May snowstorm, would the cows and calves be rounded up and moved to shelter and fed hay ? Late spring storms are not unusual in Wyoming.  The cows and calves are out in large pastures with hills and cedars and rocky ridges, all which provide shelter.  It isn’t feasible to…

Mother’s Day

Posted on May 10, 2015May 10, 2015

Still no chicks… rats!  I thought it would be perfect if they arrived on Mother’s Day! We did get snow… not much, but there’s plenty of wet slush in the rest of the Cowboy State. Here, it really started just up the road… My lilacs may feel this storm… I hope you enjoyed your Mother’s…

Enjoying Ourselves

Posted on May 9, 2015

Rain. We’re up to 1.34″ so far, with more predicted!  There’s also a huge snowstorm going to hit eastern Wyoming, although it is supposed to miss us.  Hopefully, everyone over there has their livestock in a sheltered spot and plastic over their tomatoes if they’ve planted them already. My chicks were due today… but since…

A Wonderful, Beautiful Thing

Posted on May 7, 2015

It has been raining here… a wonderful, beautiful thing!  When you live in such an arid climate, rain is a thing to be celebrated!  Of course, there are plenty of people who are whining, plans ruined, more work, and I understand… but to listen to the earth drink in the raindrops, to hear plinks on…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
