Re-COW-citrant

Posted on June 4, 2010March 27, 2015

Whew! Branding went well today, which in general terms, means there were no wrecks, no one got hurt of any consequence, calves are all branded, and the help was all fed! The day was gorgeous, even a tad on the hot side, and clouds were welcomed in the morning, and it was even overcast after…

So Many Photos, So Little Time

Posted on June 3, 2010January 9, 2015

Oh, my. I can tell I’m going to get FAAAARRRR behind on my photos! The worst of it is, I don’t have lots of desire to post tonight… Our crew started out the day by gathering the cows we’ve brought in from the badlands and taking them two miles down the road where we will…

Wordless Wednesday – “Cowgirls at Rest”

Posted on June 2, 2010January 9, 2015

I forgot my Wordless Wednesday last week and almost did again today! Forgive me, but I need posting time for other things! The WW for this week is our two cowgirls taking a break from the action.

Tiring Days

Posted on June 1, 2010January 9, 2015

Our big day of gathering turned into even a bigger one than expected. We had 13 hours of riding, gathering, sorting, trailing, and some waiting in there too!  I am *this* close to taking my Advil and hitting the hay, but figured I’d disappoint *somebody* out there if I didn’t post! On a day like…

In Your Honor

Posted on May 31, 2010January 9, 2015

We began our gather (muster/roundup) today. What we refer to as the “badlands” is not living up to its name this year.  The pasture is *gree-een*, with plenty of old feed from last year as well.  The Indian Paintbrush is bright and vivid… with orange and red the predominate colors.  I’ll have to get off…

Thrilled with Green

Posted on May 30, 2010January 9, 2015

They did it.  My kids (+1) finished AI-ing our heifers today… on schedule… with no major worries! (The scale house was the center of the action.) That was even after my boys and I went to the dance last night and got home at midnight! Yes… as Ginny stated in her comment yesterday… It DID…

The Same Shade of Red

Posted on May 28, 2010January 9, 2015

For those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter… or seen my Twitter updates by checking this blog obsessively… you haven’t heard this story. Yesterday, we finished weighing, giving shots, and sorting the heifers about 5:45 pm.  Daniel, my newly college “gradje-ated” son, had a meeting at 6:30 to renew his Red Card.  That…

Ambiance of Sorts

Posted on May 27, 2010January 9, 2015

Today began our first day of AI-ing. That’s Artificial Insemination for those of you new to ranching/or my blog. InSEMENation… there… I saved you looking it up in dictionary.com as in fertility… baby calves… semen. “But… But… You have bulls!” “Yes, we do.” We have AI’d our first calf heifers for the past few years….

Redneck Birthdays

Posted on May 26, 2010January 9, 2015

Birthday parties on our ranch might be a tad different than some “town” ones… Let’s see… Here the cake is cooked from scratch… with special thanks to s-i-l for sending some cream cheese from Casper (250 miles away) with Daniel’s girlfriend.  Otherwise, I’d have had to drive 90 miles round trip because I’m a space…

Dirt Slick

Posted on May 25, 2010January 8, 2015

YESYESYES! FINALLY! A gorgeous day… not a cloud in the sky.  Snow on the mountain, yes, but VERY nice here.  Plus the creek DIDN’T flood the way the National Weather Service predicted!  All good news. The bad news…  I spent practically all day inside cooking a birthday cake, macaroni salad, and then lunch and then…

Cats and Dogs, Foxes and Dogs

Posted on May 24, 2010January 15, 2015

.53 inches That’s the precipitation for the past 24 hours as of 7 am this morning.  It doesn’t sound like *anything*, I know, but in Wyoming it is.  It has continued to rain all day, so by morning again… perhaps another .5 is possible.  That’s 1/12 of our entire precip for the year.  Duck jokes,…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
