Blues

Posted on September 8, 2013

Panama and Rio are on level ground, it’s just Fossil Butte and other hills are angled! It rained this afternoon, not much, but between today and yesterday, it’s the most rain we’ve had in quite a while.  Everyone’s talking about how this winter is supposed to be really tough, according to local weathermen and the…

Cowboys on the Horizon

Posted on September 7, 2013

Pregnancy testing… The way to find out if a cow gets to stay or hit the road. We actually ended up just after lunch!  Two o’clock or so… which is AMAZING for us!  We’re so used to trying to do ALL of them at once, but splitting the herd in half, while it causes more…

Clouds Dancing

Posted on September 6, 2013

Well, it could have been worse! I haven’t ever gathered this leased pasture before… I’m not sure what I was doing when we were in it last year… all I knew was that the cows needed to go UP. UP is a hard direction to get cows to go! About an hour and a half…

Just Fine

Posted on September 5, 2013

A full day at work, then I had to get some food ready for tomorrow. Thankfully, the girls are pitching in, making cookies and a pasta salad… so it’s not as bad as it could be!  😉  I sure appreciate the help! We saddle at 5:30, but I’ve got to get the food loaded before…

Something

Posted on September 3, 2013

I worked in the studio pretty much all day!  You’d think I’d have accomplished an amazing amount, but, as usual, it didn’t work out that way. I spent too much time gathering tools and screws.  Definitely one of my pet peeves!  I’d had to empty the studio for them to pour the concrete, and I’d…

Old Man

Posted on September 2, 2013September 2, 2013

I was expecting to be at home with Victoria and the twins today, but got called to help load the semi that was taking our open cows to the sale. This is the time of year we cull our old cows as well… so those that weren’t pregnant (or “open”), plus the good ol’ girls…

A Few Unusual

Posted on September 1, 2013

Here are a few unusual pics from yesterday’s preg testing… Brandon is a man of many talents!  That is a rattle paddle, for those of you not current on cattle handling techniques!  It has little balls in it that rattle against the plastic, making noise, and making the cattle move along. One of these things…

G

Posted on August 31, 2013

Well, we changed up the rules on this Preg Testing Day… doing only the cows we moved two days ago, plus the few remaining AI heifers that didn’t have a good blood test result from bleeding them on the two cycles post AI date! What does that mean?  It means we were done by 3:30! …

Look At It!

Posted on August 30, 2013

It’s there! The floor is in! No more whining about it… time to put up or shut up! I’d love to spend tomorrow cleaning up around the edges… finishing up the ceiling… putting up backer board and tin so my woodstove can be hauled in… plus getting a start on everything else… but… It’s Cow…

Saddle at Six Pics

Posted on August 29, 2013

We did saddle at six… Which, honestly, is late compared to how we did it in the “olden days”!  Saddle at four was more like it! But that’s ok… It turned into a long enough day as it was… No big wrecks, it just takes time to gather a pasture, sort out the neighbor’s cows,…
