Mole Hunting Wing Man

Well… If I haven’t said it before, I’ll say it now… To be a rancher in Wyoming… You must be flexible. Not gymnastically flexible.  Most ranchers have to take a few steps before they can straighten up to full height after sitting for a bit, much less do a back flip! Flexible with your schedule….

You Yucca Two

Posted on July 11, 2010January 15, 2015

Since we’re on the subject, I had to share a bit more about the yucca plant. I *LIKE* yuccas… Consider this “more than you ever wanted to know about a plant in Wyoming”. Yuccas are versatile. The tips are sharp, needle-like, and no, you don’t want to walk through a patch of them. The individual…

You, You, You, Yucca, You!

Daniel and Brandon are 14 months apart in age.  As they were growing up, they often were mistaken for twins… some people had trouble telling them apart (which just *kills* me, because they are very different!)  Growing up on a remote ranch in Wyoming helped bond them even more than their close age.  I was…

Questions and Answers – July Edition

Posted on July 9, 2010January 15, 2015

Let’s get right to it!   What the heck is a chugwater?  Sally   Sally, all those red bluffs you see here in Wyoming are called chugwaters!  They belong to the Chugwater Formation… aka, the “Red Beds”.  Hard sandstone buttes… with a glorious red color courtesy of the rusty iron in the soil.  The formation…

Girl Day

Posted on July 8, 2010June 14, 2014

You’ve all given me a laugh with your titles for yesterday’s photo… They were creative and fun! Wyoming Gate Inspector made me giggle… The “Overlook” quotation was creative and pertains to the old name of this blog which was, ta-da!  Overlook! I have to say this was my favorite… “Wish somebody would invent a remote…

Good Morning Ride

Posted on July 6, 2010January 11, 2015

Like most Wyoming ranches this time of year, we spend a large amount of our time moving cattle to higher elevation pastures for the summer.  Yesterday another bunch of our cattle made it to the mesa… This time all five of us rode since we had about twice as many head as last time. It…

Happy Birthday, America!

Posted on July 4, 2010January 9, 2015

I can’t help it… The 4th of July in Ten Sleep is our BIG holiday… Not that we have tons of friends and family visiting… we don’t. Not that I’m cooking for 50 people… I’m not. Not that there isn’t a list of work to be done on the ranch… there is. It’s more… A…

Morning Project

Posted on July 2, 2010January 9, 2015

We took our first bunch of cows up to our Mesa Pasture this week.  There were supposed to be only 55 pairs and two bulls… this was gonna be a piece of cake!  The weather has turned from soggy, overcast, and chilly a little while ago to hot, dry wind and 90 degrees.  Black cows…

Good News/Bad News

Posted on July 1, 2010March 27, 2015

Well, like the old joke says, there’s good news and bad news. GOOD NEWS:  The tractor part that Vernon drove to Billings for was the correct part… BAD NEWS:  Turns out the transmission is broken, calling for a two week stint at the repair shop. GOOD NEWS:  We trailed our first little bunch of cattle…
