Check.

Posted on June 18, 2010January 9, 2015

Ah. Nothing like being in the saddle for 7 hours to help define your achy spots!  If your elbow was tender before, now you know you weren’t imagining things! The morning I spent weeding my garden… and then I cooked a big lunch.  I knew we were moving cows after lunch, and more often than…

Pleasing Results

Posted on June 17, 2010January 9, 2015

The other day, my youngest son took the time to teach me how to weld.  He was busy in the same shop, but patiently explained the very basics… handed me some rod… and set me free.  This is a goal I have had on my “list” for years. I was vewyvewyvewy grateful! My first project,…

Crane In Grass

Posted on June 15, 2010January 9, 2015

K, Folks, here it is! My “Crane in Grass” is making its completed debut… I know… DEFINITELY not square, which is easy to see outdoors but in the dark shop on an uneven floor it was more, uh… difficult.  I can eyeball things much better than that! I also found out… there’s no overs in…

Muses and Cranes

Posted on June 14, 2010January 9, 2015

SUNSHINE! I repeat, SUNSHINE! Yay! Well, partly cloudy this morning, but by afternoon the sky was brilliant blue and the high temperature was around 74… 30 degrees warmer than yesterday. I spent some of the morning pulling weeds from my garden, amazingly enough, weeds don’t stop growing just because it is raining…  When I get…

Rain Is a Good Thing

Posted on June 13, 2010January 9, 2015

Rain is a good thing… honestly… in Wyoming’s dry climate, water is scarce.  On Wyoming ranches everything is based on limited water.  Reservoirs and pipelines to water cattle.  Irrigation for crops and hay.  Wells for drinking.  Snow runoff captured to help through the ‘dry’ summer heat.  Well.  Actually.  We haven’t hit that ‘dry’ heat spell…

Varmint Gitters

Posted on June 12, 2010January 9, 2015

When I first investigated English Shepherds, one of the “side benefits” was the tendency of these dogs to “dispatch vermin” according to the breed standard. When you’ve had dogs give rabbits, deer, raccoons, skunks, mice, moles, and voles free rein in your yard and garden… dispatching vermin is an excellent idea! I have to say,…

Happiness Ensued

Posted on June 11, 2010January 9, 2015

Victoria and I went to her bridal shower Wednesday night…  wow! what a turnout!  I remember mine, in fact the same lady hosted mine (~29 years ago) and Victoria’s!… I reviewed my wedding book, many people were there for me that attended Victoria’s. I remember not knowing a soul but one or two friends and…

Questions and Answers – June Edition

Posted on June 10, 2010January 9, 2015

WOW!  I had great response for this Q&A! Let’s get to it! Kris wrote:
When you were sorting the cattle a few days ago — was that all your cattle, and you were just taking out the ones you wanted to brand? Or was it your cattle mixed up with other ranches, and if so, do…

This is perhaps the best portrait I’ve ever taken of Lucas. Plus, remember to submit your questions for the month… I’ll answer them tomorrow.

Brush Up

Posted on June 8, 2010March 27, 2015

Ahhh… A day not spent on horseback. Victoria and I made some lists and plans for the wedding… and gathered up some of the ribbons and decorations we’ve purchased along the way… We still need to make some arrangements and go up to the site and make some more lists.  We talked cake, how much,…

Getting Wet

Posted on June 7, 2010January 9, 2015

After gathering, sorting, branding, re-sorting, and trailing to new pastures… it was time to move our *first* bunch we’d branded into a new pasture. We set out under mostly cloudy skies… but both Accu-Weather and NOAA had both declared the day was going to be sunny. Yeah. My slicker still hadn’t migrated to my saddle…
