The Other Hundred Photos…

Posted on October 5, 2009November 23, 2014

I know… my query from yesterday wasn’t very difficult. If you’ve ever been to Wyoming to visit Yellowstone National Park… You probably left or entered by the south entrance. That’s Grand Teton National Park. And if a zillion photos have been taken of Old Faithful… a zillion and one photos have been taken of the…

Road Trip!

Posted on October 4, 2009March 25, 2015

Corral is mended… Calves are all located and returned to proper corral… It is time to see some Wyoming country! We left the snow here… to find snow on the mountaintops our entire trip! For instance… here’s the Owl Creek Mountains near Thermopolis… Here’s Wind River Canyon… The name of the river? The Big Horn!…

Best Laid Plans…

Posted on October 3, 2009January 5, 2015

I’m glad only family saw me today… I rarely get really really mad… but today was one of those days. I had been looking forward to this new little celebration Ten Sleep was going to put on today… The Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Every stockman around… whether cattleman or sheepman… is trailing their stock…

These Busy Days

Posted on October 2, 2009January 5, 2015

This week has kept us hopping… Sunday we gathered our cattle… Monday we sorted and weaned the calves from the cows… and shipped them down the hill… Tuesday we had to vaccinate all the calves… Wednesday it snowed and I managed to catch up on housework, build a fire, and stay warm throughout the day……

Honest Dog

Posted on October 1, 2009January 5, 2015

Unfortunately… the other day in between gathering the cattle and returning to wean the calves the next day… We lost a cow. Lost as in *dead*. Four legs pointing to the sky. Cows don’t tend to tip over as easily as sheep, but they do have one major method of unlikely death… They can easily……

Wordless Wednesday – “Dally’s Quiet Reflection”

Posted on September 30, 2009January 5, 2015

Dally is still long enough so that I could capture her reflection…

Weaning

Posted on September 29, 2009January 5, 2015

After I thought about yesterday’s post… I figured I should set the record straight. Weaning *is* stressful for cows *and* calves… Cows don’t really seem to mind until their full udders remind them they’ve lost something… and the bellowing of other cows just fuel their feeling of loss… If you could hear the calves bawling…

One Last Glimpse

Posted on September 28, 2009January 5, 2015

We gathered our pairs yesterday… Mommas and 6 month old calves… well, on the calves’ ages give or take a month or two… The cows are pregnant and to grow that brand new baby nice and healthy… it is best to kick that older kid off of the milk machine! I can work myself up…

Gatherin’ to Wean OOPE

Posted on September 27, 2009January 5, 2015

We gathered our mountain pasture today… Tomorrow we wean our calves from their mommas… The boys delayed their return to Laramie for a couple of hours so they could help… Besides the *definite* chill in the air and the *wind*… It was a great day up there! I had on my winter Carhartt… gloves… chinks……

Boys Interrupted

Posted on September 26, 2009May 13, 2014

My boys came home last night… That was the reason I wrote my entry EARLY last night… So that I could visit with them after they arrived last night… Too bad I forgot to hit the “publish” button last night… I’ll blame it on the boys interrupting me! Tonight Daniel is working on his laptop… It…

I Love Barns…

Posted on September 25, 2009January 5, 2015

Hey Hey Hey Hay!

Posted on September 24, 2009March 25, 2015

I’ve said it before… Our life revolves around hay just as much (if not more!) than cattle… Of course, the reason we raise hay is because we raise cattle… and… strangely enough… those big ol’ critters tend to want to eat in the middle of winter when there’s snow on the ground… Cows are demanding…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
