Advantage

Posted on February 2, 2015

One of the basic things I believe you should teach your dog is patience and calmness.  Calmness around livestock is a great quality to have… it’s easier on your dog… and your cattle.  While I’ve let Eden go along on some trail drives, I haven’t really WORKED her.  She’s followed the other dogs and had…

It’ll Be Fun

Posted on January 25, 2015

Thanks for the encouragement on my pastel work… I’m excited to keep trying it!  I had pastels a LONG time ago, and just remember how the yellow would be covered in black, or the orange had green on it, because I kept them all thrown in a box together!  I didn’t like that!  In fact,…

Tricky

Posted on January 24, 2015

This occupied my morning… Since I’m stuck with posting from my ipad tonight, I’m only going to share the end result.  This is Mace, he’s Lucas’ half brother.  I didn’t quite capture him… He needs width between his eyes, a blockier head, SOMETHING! But since this is my first attempt with pastel pencils, I’ll give…

Great Walk

Posted on January 17, 2015

After the normal routine of feeding cattle and chopping ice, the guys went snowmobiling for fun, and I decided on such a NICE sunny day, the dogs and I would head out for another shot at snowshoeing around the fields.  It was much easier this time as I used my dad’s old fashioned bear paw…

Yip-ee

Posted on December 23, 2014

I had a list with 20 items on it.  Things To Do Before Christmas. I managed the first three… then Vernon came home and said he was kicking cows out.  Since the day was bright and sunny and NICE, I offered to take my dogs and go along, just because I love to procrastinate as…

Some Giggles

Posted on December 12, 2014

What do you do with two pups, one who needs to learn to relax a bit, one who needs to learn to have a little extra zip?  Well, while we weighed our calves today, Daniel’s plan was to tie them together. Eden is ready to rush and “get ’em” and she needs to learn to…

Hunter

Posted on December 6, 2014

She’s a hunter. Elsa was better by far than Dally or Lucas… Maybe Eden has inherited those genes from her Great Aunt. After training on some basic commands in the field (close to some calves for distraction and acclimation), I turned her loose with the “mouse, mouse!” command.  I didn’t really think she’d do too…

Black and White

Posted on November 22, 2014

Finally finished.  The black and white Red Dirt In My Soul 2015 calendar is available for purchase! Unfortunately, I just took this photo today, so it’s not in there…  😉  Maybe next year if I sell some! This monochromatic version includes my favorite b&w and sepia pics from this last year. Check it out here.

Hard Stuff

Posted on November 11, 2014November 11, 2014

Honestly… I really really really contemplated not writing this post.  People told me not to.  People told me to lie.  People told me to just let it go, that you would forget, and I’d be safe.  I thought about all the options.  But, I’ve tried to be honest on here… and an outright lie just…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
