More Preparations

Posted on January 19, 2009December 13, 2014

Along with pulling up the electric fence wire, our preparations for calving included cleaning the calving shed.  The red shed is easily seen from my house through the boxelder trees.  It is a five minute walk from here. Soon we’ll be putting our heifers, 60 of ’em, in here every night.  We’ll sort off the…

Sorting OOPE Fave

Posted on January 16, 2009December 9, 2014

The idea of OOPEs is that the photographs are taken as my camera sits in the pocket of my Carhartt coat.  Yesterday’s photos especially proved this point… this shot more than the others.  There’s the cuff of my coat on the upper left… and the edge of my pocket on the bottom.  In between is…

Sorting OOPE

Posted on January 15, 2009December 9, 2014

I did it!  I actually took photos while sorting cattle!  Yes, I waited until most of it was done and yes, most of the pics are definitely OOPEs but considering I didn’t drop my camera and Tart and I didn’t lose any cows and Tart and I didn’t fall down on the *)(&*&^% ice – I…

January Gather OOPE

Posted on January 14, 2009December 9, 2014

We began gathering our cows off the BLM today with our neighbors that share the allotment.  I am sore from hunching up against the snow even though it was very light and a fairly nice day.  I took my hot shower and I’m ready for bed, but, of course, have to post these OOPE photos…

Playing in the Snow

Posted on January 13, 2009December 9, 2014

The boys returned to Laramie on Sunday to start their spring semester.  We’re always so proud that they’ve grown up to be hard-working men. Then Daniel emails these pictures to me. What is that quote you like, Toria?  “The greater the mind, the greater the need for play?”  Or some such Spock-ism like that… Well,…

Bangs OOPE

Posted on January 11, 2009February 15, 2015

The other day I managed to have an OOPE day.  We were bangs vaccinating our young heifers… or brucellosis vaccinating.  For those of you who don’t know, brucellosis is a contagious disease that causes abortion in cattle.  Female cattle must be proven to have had the vaccination at the time of sale.  To do this, a veterinarian…

Somedays…

Posted on January 7, 2009December 1, 2014

Do you ever have those days where there is so much information going into your brain and rattling around that you know you won’t be able to sleep? Today is one of those days. Brandon and I went to a Range Management Workshop today, so we have lots of new terminology and ideas ricocheting around…

Floor

Posted on January 6, 2009December 2, 2014

Well, it needs 4 more cut panels and the little pantry yet… but I think I’ll declare the floor done!  It wasn’t that hard once we figured out seams and grout lines and centering and the 3 patterns we had to work with!  We made mistakes that cost us time and extra panels, but we…

Bar Log Video

Posted on January 5, 2009June 15, 2012

Here’s the video I promised.  Yes, it is long and I’m sorry about that… but I hated to leave any step out!   This sawmill was originally owned by Vernon’s great uncle who then sold it to the Mills Ranch about 45 years ago.  My kids are thrilled to learn how to run it.  They…

Bar Log

Posted on January 4, 2009December 2, 2014

Up at the Mills Place is a sawmill.  Ped and Gary, the Mills brothers, both enjoyed working this sawmill.  Vernon had helped Ped a time or two, but had never run the saw.  Now, Gary wants to keep the sawmill, so we don’t own it, but ever since we’ve bought the place, my boys have…

Roads

Posted on January 2, 2009December 2, 2014

We made a flying trip to Billings today.  I hadn’t planned to go because originally it was just Vernon and Victoria going to Cody to finish up the paperwork on her new car.  But Vernon said since they would be halfway to Billings, why didn’t I go along and we’d figure out our cabinets. See,…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
