Four Minutes of My Day

Posted on September 12, 2010March 27, 2015

I’ve had my shower, removed some trail dust, and I’m currently sipping on some of the *finest wine*.  OK.  Charles Shaw.  From Trader Joe’s. <It was reported that my previous link had malware attached to it.  So sorry.  Please don’t let it download anything!  Thanks, Penny!> I can relax now… so long as Rocky quits *barking*……

Mr. Porcupine from Carol Greet on Vimeo. I think I have it… My camera is shooting AVCHDLite and actually transferring only *half* of the recorded time… this video should have been 1:42 not 0:51.  So the little devil looks like he’s scurrying around.  Wrong.  Porcupines don’t scurry.  There’s no need to worry when you’re covered…

Piggysitting Part Poo… Uh, Two…

Posted on August 6, 2010January 15, 2015

So I admit it… I know nothing about pigs. We were given one for an early wedding present… his name was Amos.  I believe Vernon really hated hauling him to the processing plant… but I hadn’t been around him much.  I patted him on the head like three times… and ate him after we got…

My Breed, Part Two

Posted on August 1, 2010January 15, 2015

As this country was settled, dogs trotted alongside the pioneers.  Dogs that could warn of strangers, herd livestock, protect children, kill varmints, hunt, and lay on your feet on those cold winter nights in your drafty old soddy.  They were simple collies or shepherds… not the fancy show Rough Collies like Lassie.  They weren’t English,…

Varmint Gitters

Posted on June 12, 2010January 9, 2015

When I first investigated English Shepherds, one of the “side benefits” was the tendency of these dogs to “dispatch vermin” according to the breed standard. When you’ve had dogs give rabbits, deer, raccoons, skunks, mice, moles, and voles free rein in your yard and garden… dispatching vermin is an excellent idea! I have to say,…

Sorting Pairs

Posted on June 5, 2010January 9, 2015

The past few days we seemed to have been sorting pairs constantly! Gathering in the badlands… we sorted. Moving them in time for branding… we sorted. Today, we dispersed the herd into four different pastures with appropriate bulls and… we sorted. It’s what we do. The other day… when I was supposed to be cooking…

Re-COW-citrant

Posted on June 4, 2010March 27, 2015

Whew! Branding went well today, which in general terms, means there were no wrecks, no one got hurt of any consequence, calves are all branded, and the help was all fed! The day was gorgeous, even a tad on the hot side, and clouds were welcomed in the morning, and it was even overcast after…

Wildflowers

Posted on May 20, 2010March 27, 2015

One of the best things I did today was to take the time to go photograph the creek flooding and some wildflowers. As I headed out the door, I noticed I had left my little camera powered on… and minimal battery time was left.  RATS.  I had to switch to my big Olympus telephoto and…

One More Time

Posted on April 6, 2010March 26, 2015

WOW. AMAZING. I had 30 (Thirty!  yes, thirty!) comments on yesterday’s entry!  Way to go, readers!  I’m just so tickled and thrilled you’d share like that! A few words of clarification.  Yes, *I* call this blog, Overlook… but many readers don’t notice that and that is NOT what you type in to get here.  That…

Puppy Thursday… I Fail AGAIN!

Posted on November 19, 2009December 28, 2014

Yeah… I know… I FAIL! I don’t have their weekly photos ready… But I was WORKING! <insert whine> Honestly, yesterday we sorted off our replacement heifers… and today we retagged them, age branded them, and tattooed them. And then we had to trail them to the Mills Place. LET ME EXPLAIN… We retag them because…
