To Bee at Summer School

Posted on July 17, 2014

This morning I hosted Ten Sleep’s summer school on a field trip.  Their focus is on… bees!  I decided I could help with that! First was a talk on my lawn… where we looked at new and old comb and dead bees and brood comb and drone comb and had a bite of my honey……

Live It

Posted on July 15, 2014

It’s not even 10 and I’m bushed. We moved those cows today, and it was very pretty and slightly cooler up on the mountain!  The chance for rain was high, so we all packed our slickers, expecting to get rained on most of the day.  Turns out, it only started raining when we finally were…

Updated and Completed

Posted on July 14, 2014

Another hot day… I spent most of it behind my lawnmower.  The big riding mower has a dead battery, so me and the little push mower spent quality time together today.  And no, I don’t mean, rotary push mower!  I have one, but I like more lawn mowed than I ever could accomplish with it!…

So Tall

Posted on July 13, 2014

It’s time to start shuffling cows around.  We’re trying to do it slowly.  It’s been a great grass year and as long as they’re still happy and staying where they should… we’ve been leaving them alone.  We still wait as long as possible before getting clear on top… we let the poisonous larkspur run its…

“Red Hills Set Me Free”

Posted on July 12, 2014

I just have to share this… Sage is related to me… and recently spent a few days camping with various relatives a couple of miles from here.  Her mom reads this blog, and after they were home, shared it with her.  Well, Sage disappeared after viewing my blog and later re-emerged from her room with…

Rangeland Assessment

Posted on July 10, 2014

Range Assessment. A complex evaluation of the condition of rangeland… dependent on soil and plant identification and condition with 17 indicators.  That is what the Bureau of Land Management was out doing on the badlands pastures yesterday.  Permittees were invited out and a neighbor and his daughter and I took them up on it. I’ve…

Who’s Your Daddy?

Posted on July 8, 2014

So Brandon spent most of his Sunday doing this. Yup.  Looking under a heifers tail… getting covered in blood and poo.  I gave him an extremely short break by doing about 8 heifers right before lunch…  I’m not near as fast or efficient, but I can get it done.  It probably would have helped had…

Time Allows

Posted on July 6, 2014

Holy oven, Batman!  It was HOT today.  93˚ and not a cloud in the sky.  It was on CONVECT today. Eleven o’clock, and I’m still trying to suck down more water. We bled our heifers… but that is not the topic for the day… The topic was supposed to be the RODEO! From “mutton busting”…
