Sigh

Posted on March 19, 2010January 9, 2015

Really. After one day of playing with my watermark, I now can’t get it to work.  And no, I wasn’t going to leave it black, I actually wanted it to be a clear watermark… barely indistinguishable… but!  whatever I’ve done to it, it doesn’t want to apply itself to my photos tonight. <sigh> A computer…

The New Toy

Posted on March 18, 2010January 9, 2015

The New Toy After doing this blog for over two years (!) now, I know how many of you appreciate Wyoming’s scenery and my ranch photography.  I’m thrilled you think my snapshots of rural life have beauty and meaning. For a long time I used my Olympus C-700 which had a great zoom for its…

Hello, Everyone!

Posted on March 16, 2010March 26, 2015

Again a day of calving and vaccinating… it was pretty much a ditto day for yesterday… One question was posed about yesterday’s activities… “How do you know which heifers you’ve already vaccinated?” Which is a great and legitimate question. One that just points out where I fail in describing our ranch and everyday actions. Glad…

Rust Colors

Posted on March 15, 2010January 9, 2015

Today was spent checking for newborn calves and vaccinating some of last year’s heifers for various illnesses that cattle can get these days… BRSV, lepto, BVD, IBR, and PI3.  Confused? Yeah, that’s understandable.  Basically it covers them for many viral infections that can mess with their pregnancies (though they aren’t pregnant yet) or give them…

Bottle Baby

Posted on March 14, 2010January 9, 2015

Guess what I’m doing? Wow. Good guess. We have a little bitty calf born to one of our heifers…  He’s super tiny and his momma doesn’t have much for a bag (in other words – she might not be giving much milk) … so we’ve decided to supplement his daily allowance. There you are… come…

Nice, Kitty, Kitty

Posted on March 13, 2010January 9, 2015

Last year’s entry about today’s event was labeled “Herding Cats“.  In it, I elaborated how much moving baby calves was a painful, frustrating process which let me lose my temper and get disgusted at anything with Angus blood and 4 hooves.  And a few other moving things… Today’s version was… not like that at all!…

What is it Winner

Posted on March 11, 2010February 5, 2015

The question I posed yesterday: What is this? Drumroll please…. Yup, calf hooves! Sandy, sorry I about made you ill… DK, putting on gloves never occurs to me… my hands are washable and I don’t go farther in to contaminate her… This heifer was very calm… but the hooves seemed a little large… so I…

Posted on March 10, 2010January 9, 2015

Twisted

Posted on March 9, 2010January 9, 2015

In case you’ve wondered… Yes, calving season is cruising along. We have calved all but 9 of our heifers… so we still are doing our evening, 2 am, and early morning checks.   Last week our cows started calving as well.  We do not check them in the night, but do try to keep a…

Fossil Cliffhanger … part two

Posted on March 8, 2010January 9, 2015

Fossils are prolific in Wyoming. This place is heaven if you like fossil fish… Then there’s mucho dinosaurs in the Big Horn Basin… Even in my front driveway are these… thousands of white seashells imbedded in a matrix. And my friend Shreve over at Daily Coyote makes extra bucks selling belemnites! But for now… these…
