Minute Movie – “Bull Fight”

Posted on August 15, 2011April 1, 2015

When you’ve spent thousands of dollars on a bull to improve the genetics of your herd, the last thing you want to see is two of them fighting. Bulls weigh around a ton… and when fighting with another… injuries can happen!  Broken legs and broken, uhm… equipment… (remember, bulls are only good for one thing!)…

Minute Movie – “Ride Along”

Posted on August 14, 2011April 1, 2015

Come with me in the early morning light through sagebrush taller than Panama… Pick your way through the maze and watch as Dally urges some cattle onwards… The cows bellow for their calves, and the calves bawl back, a pingpong serenade of “Where are you?” in Bovinese. Welcome to the Cowboy Life.   Minute Movie…

Looking For a Wrench

Posted on August 13, 2011April 1, 2015

He’d heard a strange noise in the discbine and grabbed a couple of crescent wrenches to tighten on the loose part.  Testing his repair, he set the wrenches down and wiggled and jiggled the connection to make sure his quick fix would hold. With thoughts rushing ahead to the job at hand, he entered the…

Take Your Kids

Posted on August 12, 2011April 1, 2015

What are you doing inside? You should be outside. Sleeping on your lawn. Waiting for the perfect Perseid to overpower the moonrays. Falling asleep then startling awake as *another* falling star whizzes by. Even with the full moon, the Perseids can put on a good show! Even with smoke filled air… (Ours is from the…

Shopping In Wyoming

Posted on August 11, 2011January 19, 2015

I’m guessing here… but the possibility exists that some of you readers out there in Blogland LOVE to shop. Do you hit the malls or boutiques for dresses and shoes? Are you a bargain hunter or eBay surfer or Etsy aficionada? Do you shop on your lunch hour or weekends? The possibility that someone might…

The Last Pair

Posted on August 9, 2011April 1, 2015

I have another early morning heading my way. I’m supposed to roll out about 4:15, be ready to leave my house by 4:50. Drive to Worland to be there around 5:50. Why? Because this last pair… these cutey patooties… Stocky Stormy with her wild left ear, and Niobrara with her slight build and high set…

Dog Gone Long Day

Posted on August 8, 2011April 1, 2015

Saturday’s trail drive covered about 12 miles. The elevation rose from 5100′ to about 7700′. It took from about 5 am to 4 pm.  Of course, we had two stops to rest in there, once after a big hill climb, once for lunch.  We then waited two more hours to let them settle down and…

Bits of My Day

Posted on August 6, 2011April 1, 2015

Yup. Pretty much recovered… although I haven’t had a very stressful day.  The guys have, as they were called out on a lightning fire this afternoon. It was popping all around us, and I was sent to watch for smoke around here, while the guys went to the fire.  The plan was to call dispatch…

Morning Light

Posted on August 6, 2011January 19, 2015

Let me take a wild guess… at 3:30 this morning, you were asleep in bed… having a little REM action. All comfy. Yeah, well, I’m jealous! When we move our cows to our mountain pasture, you’ve got to be on your horse and riding in the dark to get to the right spot just as…

Hunting Lessons

Posted on August 5, 2011January 19, 2015

Jireh left today to her new family… I think she’s going to have a *wonderful* time! Afterwards the last two pups started following Elsa and Dally and I followed them. It quickly sank in what was going on. Stormy and Nioby were being taught how to hunt moles. A favorite place is along the fenceline…
