Better This Time

Posted on May 29, 2026May 29, 2026

Ugh. Trips to town… I didn’t even hit all the stores I had planned. I only forgot two things. But after working at the library until 1:00, our summer hours have begun, it didn’t leave as much time as I needed, but more than I wanted! Both greenhouses were absent of tomato plants for my…

Tuck II

Posted on May 9, 2026May 9, 2026

In case you’ve been wondering, little Tuck is doing good. She has become quite the pet, jumping on my hand like a parakeet. Happy to see me, she would only be loud when I was opening her cage to feed and water her. As much as I have enjoyed that, she is growing and she…

Good News

Posted on April 3, 2026April 3, 2026

The Good News? Besides that it’s Good Friday? Tuck is still alive! She’s doing fine, eating and drinking. She’s grown quieter, perhaps finally realizing all the peeping isn’t getting her the attention she wants. I’m hoping the second clutch of eggs hatches tomorrow so she can have some company. We were blessed with 5” of…

Tuck

Posted on March 31, 2026March 31, 2026

I do this to myself way too often! I had a hen go broody soon after I got Harold, a rooster from Victoria. Come to find out, it only takes 48 hours after you get a rooster that the eggs are fertile. I think I waited over a week and then gave her five eggs….

Hello, Harold

Posted on March 3, 2026March 3, 2026

Meet Harold. Or Derald. We weren’t really sure. Anyone remember the John Wayne movie Harold and Derald were in? Harold came from Victoria. Harold was my last rooster’s “brother”. Victoria ended up with three roosters last spring. Unfortunately, my rooster didn’t make it after his incident getting caught in my fence. She was thrilled to…

Black Plastic

Posted on January 11, 2026January 11, 2026

Quick story of the day: Walking out to jump in the Jeep and go to Quinlan’s basketball game against Arapaho, I glanced to the right and saw that black piece of plastic still stuck in my fence. I’d seen it last night, but being basically lazy, I hadn’t walked over to pick it up before…

Kerfuffle

Posted on January 4, 2026January 4, 2026

There was quite the bit of excitement in my chicken coop this morning. I’ve had a few mice in there… easily remedied with the application of one of my cats. I guess as I moved the grain bucket, a mouse darted out from underneath. A ruckus ensued among the hens. For many people, they envision…

Mystery

Posted on December 30, 2025December 30, 2025

So a couple of weeks ago, I bought 11 chickens from my neighbor. That gave me 20 hens and one rooster. I was back in the egg business! I kept them locked in the coop and in a small area outside for a week, just to teach them that this was where they belonged and…

Recovering

Posted on December 16, 2025December 16, 2025

I had to recruit help. With the addition of my new young hens, I’m getting eggs once again and I’m thrilled. But as I let them out into their new pen, I noticed a couple were limping. We had used a chicken hook to catch them the other day… had we hurt them? No. As…

Suggestions?

Posted on September 29, 2025September 29, 2025

It must just be his bad side because this guy is pretty handsome… This is my new rooster, courtesy of Victoria. Out of her chicks, 3 turned out to be roosters. I haven’t had a rooster for a couple of years, so I’m giving it a try again. The cost of chicks has gone up…

Chicken Beads Update

Posted on February 22, 2025February 22, 2025

A few weeks ago, I saw online (somewhere, I can’t remember or I’d give credit) the idea that a bead curtain would keep wild birds out of your chicken coop. So I tried it. See my initial test run HERE. I thought I’d update you since I’ve made a few changes. First of all, it’s…

Hippy Chicks

Posted on February 3, 2025February 3, 2025

An update on my beaded curtain for my chicken coop. It works! Since I’ve hung up their hippy style beaded curtain in the door, NO little sparrows or chickadees have entered my coop. I regularly would have 1-6 little birds in there at night when I closed up. I’ve had ZERO. Wild birds are no…
