New Hired Hand

Posted on May 28, 2013

Well, after much debate… and consideration… We’ve purchased a new hired hand… Meet the new Yamaha Rhino side by side. A little less expensive than the Honda, and hopefully, just as tough! It’ll get a workout around here, so I’m hoping it’s built to take what the ranch can dish out!

Hugelkultur Eins

Posted on May 27, 2013

I’ve finally started it… the laying out of my small hugelkultur beds. Hugelkultur, if you recall from this previous post, is where you create a berm, the base of which consists of tree stumps and limbs.  Other natural litter is placed on and around it, much like lasagna gardening.  The final layer of dirt becomes…

Spring Rain

Posted on May 26, 2013

Thunderhead. I’ve loved that name ever since I read the sequel to My Friend Flicka. This storm brought a little rain and hail, not enough to hurt anything here… and tomorrow I may be brave enough to set out my tomato plants… and then I’ll have to worry about them getting beat to a pulp!…

Weekend Started

Posted on May 24, 2013

Busy day! I was a tad bit early to the show… so I took some time for wildflower photography… Then I helped begin the AI process… which consists of a shot of Lutalyse, which is a prostaglandin.  It synchronizes estrus, in other words, all our heifers should come into heat in the next few days……

Windssssday Gusts

Posted on May 23, 2013

The topic of the past two days just HAS to be the wind!  It’d be so much nicer if the wind just wouldn’t come after having all this great rain and moisture, because it just sucks it right back out of the ground! Plus, we’ve had it much more severe than usual… 74 mph is…

All In All

Posted on May 21, 2013

That hot tub I haven’t bought yet?  I sure could use it now! I spent the morning spray painting my garden shed and garage, at least as far as I could get on a ladder!  So there’s the up and down, the weight of the backpack of paint (only 8#, but still…) and the reaching…

Make My Own

Posted on May 20, 2013

Small fact.  Too much rain is a direct link to a rancher spending too much money! See… it works like this. Rain falls in abundance… rancher can’t work in fields or haul out supplies to fix fence or clean muddy ditches or travel anywhere… EXCEPT on highways.  Rancher decides to take day off and use…

Nowood International Airport

Posted on May 19, 2013

Good grief, Gertrude! It’s raining STILL!  We haven’t done this much rain in a while!  .73″ yesterday and .64″ so far tonight.  It’s continuing to rain, and it has taken all day to get the .64″, which was MUCH different than yesterday’s downpour. The neighbors have high water, and ours sounded loud when I went…

Rain!

Posted on May 18, 2013

.73″ of rain poured out of the sky today… most of it in about a half an hour!  It was interesting there for a bit, with lightning popping and thunder rolling. My dogs just KNEW a strike was headed for them, so anywhere within 3′ of a human was BOUND to be safer, right?  They’re…

Amazing Piece

Posted on May 17, 2013

Seems like I need to start these entries a little earlier… I’ve been falling asleep and not feeling like waking up enough to write!  That’s typical springtime… the rush is on to clean, garden, farm, ride, move cattle, irrigate and plant.  Where we were in snow just a few weeks ago, the grass has now…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
