Grass and Weaning

Posted on September 15, 2014September 15, 2014

Well, I didn’t ride today, I decided to go back to bed!  After waking up two hours later, I teamed up with my sister-and-brother-in-law.  We drove up the mountain just to have lunch with the guys!  We had perfect timing, catching them as they brought the cows in the horse pasture and then into the…

Three Years

Posted on September 14, 2014

Well, I caught the cold everyone’s been passing around, so I was miserable today.  I’m not thrilled, this week is going to be busy and I’d prefer to be able to BREATHE. Nevertheless, it was a Big Day, as grandson #1 turned three!  Those three years passed very fast! He had a great cake and…

Whatshername

Posted on September 13, 2014

I’d like to introduce you to … uh. Whatshername. I’m still not sure what her name is going to be… as Lucas’ breeder can tell you, sometimes it takes me FOREVER to decide on a name…  It will probably have something about fire, or light, or red dirt!  Lucas’ registered name is Rimrock Lone Firelight…

Be Prepared

Posted on September 11, 2014

September 11th, and it’s snowing in Wyoming. While we only had a couple inches in Ten Sleep, the mountain received more, of course.  Four or five inches fell on our mountain pasture.  Vernon drove up there to check on the cows. On the other side of the mountain, though, it was a different story. Anywhere…

Questions and Answers: September 2014 Edition

Posted on September 9, 2014

Let’s go! Susan:  Do you grow oats too??? Yes.  But only to supplement our calves’ feed in the wintertime.  We usually plant a field or two to oats and perhaps barley.  This year was so wet, one field was turned into oat hay, and this one we did manage to harvest oats. Marilyn:  How are…

Roasting Ears

Posted on September 8, 2014

One of the best summer treats there is… fresh corn! One of my favorite ways to cook it? Roasted in the coals of a campfire! Soak your corn in cool water, grab some tongs and some gloves… (beer is optional). Get some good coals going… the best way to do that?  Build a log cabin…

The Story of Oats

Posted on September 7, 2014

From standing in the field… To laying in wait for the combine in nice windrows… Being thrashed… The windrow now waits to be made into straw bales.  (Which I didn’t get a photo of…) Off loaded into the truck… When this truck is full, it will be loaded into a granary to await winter and…

Hugelkultur Zwei

Posted on September 5, 2014

Long ago… well, in May of 2013, I started building my hugelkultur bed.  It was a simple test and I didn’t get too carried away just because if it failed, I didn’t want too big of a mess to clean up!  Well… my opinion now is… It’s a success! My small L-shaped bed was great…

Something New

Posted on September 4, 2014

Yesterday was spent pregnancy testing a small bunch of cows… While we normally have the vet just “arm them”, the neighbor wanted her little bunch sonogrammed instead.  She also wanted to find out what sex they were (which you can do if they are over 60 days old).  While normal sonogramming can be almost as…
