Roasting Ears

Posted on September 8, 2014

One of the best summer treats there is… fresh corn! One of my favorite ways to cook it? Roasted in the coals of a campfire! Soak your corn in cool water, grab some tongs and some gloves… (beer is optional). Get some good coals going… the best way to do that?  Build a log cabin…

The Story of Oats

Posted on September 7, 2014

From standing in the field… To laying in wait for the combine in nice windrows… Being thrashed… The windrow now waits to be made into straw bales.  (Which I didn’t get a photo of…) Off loaded into the truck… When this truck is full, it will be loaded into a granary to await winter and…

Hugelkultur Zwei

Posted on September 5, 2014

Long ago… well, in May of 2013, I started building my hugelkultur bed.  It was a simple test and I didn’t get too carried away just because if it failed, I didn’t want too big of a mess to clean up!  Well… my opinion now is… It’s a success! My small L-shaped bed was great…

Something New

Posted on September 4, 2014

Yesterday was spent pregnancy testing a small bunch of cows… While we normally have the vet just “arm them”, the neighbor wanted her little bunch sonogrammed instead.  She also wanted to find out what sex they were (which you can do if they are over 60 days old).  While normal sonogramming can be almost as…

Adding Color

Posted on September 2, 2014

Babysat the grandkids so Tess could go ride and gather cows… preg testing a small bunch tomorrow! I did manage to put a bit of color on my poster’s test copy for Craig Johnson.  It’s not finished yet, and I don’t like the pink/purple in the upper right corner… but that’s why it’s a test…

Lucas Working Video

Posted on September 1, 2014

This. This is what he was born to do. On one hand, I love watching him do this.  Unbidden.  Quiet.  I *love* quiet. On the other, his hopskip cracks my heart. At the end of the mile, going through the gate, he lays down exhausted, and lets the heifers file through on their own. He…

Woolen Blocks

Posted on August 31, 2014

Darkness is coming earlier in the evening, and I find myself reaching for unfinished projects to work on as I sit on the couch. My first choice… Soft woolen blocks for the granddaughters…  I had needle felted the designs on, but not finished the handstitching… Made from a multicolored felt piece from Lucy’s Sheep Camp,…

Colt’s Video

Posted on August 30, 2014

Colt has been here a while now… and he knows the routine. He loves me and likes attention, although he’s not a snuggler, and while he asks for it, he still remains tense if you mess with his back half!  He tolerates it, and then asks for more.  He and Lucas have a truce, but…

Some Creativity

Posted on August 29, 2014

I’ve been working on a new video… hopefully with less uploading trauma than the last one! So for tonight’s quick pic… I thought I’d make you jealous. The view from my studio this evening… A fingernail moon ornamented the sky just barely out of view, I did catch it in other photos, but still preferred…

Tragedy to Success

Posted on August 28, 2014

Let’s move on to some much better news… If you’ve been around here for any length of time, you know Lucas. My heart dog. I’ve been meaning to share a video of him when he got to work cows a couple of weeks ago, but you know, other things have taken up my thoughts lately! …
